Ahhh... 

I misread your question. the smb.conf has nothing to do with accessing
windows shares. It affects windows machines accessing shares on the
linux machine.

I've seen this bug previously - You can connect to one and only one
share from nautilus, and only once. I thought its had been fixed for
2.8 though.
