Let's say you have 100 files handpicked and selected. All it takes is an 
inadvertent Shift-click somewhere--pretty much anywhere--to stuff that 
up. Or a Ctrl-click causing autoscrolling of the window. Or maybe the 
most severe and common one: when releasing both Ctrl and Shift to go 
into a menu or something else, you inadvertently click or trigger your 
touchpad's tap function somewhere in the file area. Selection gone.

Yes, that's the only downside of it that I can see. Perhaps an 
alternative to it would be to be able to "undo" selection actions, but 
that doesn't strike me as immediately intuitive.
