This might be the same problem as was discussed on this list in November
2003 (took a while to track down the problem). If you have a package
called "inetutils-tools" installed, then install "net-tools" instead
(remove inetutils-tools). Before you do that, you can test whether this
is the problem by "disabling" /usr/bin/ifconfig in some way (e.g. moving
it temporarily to /tmp) and then trying to bring your network up again.
