One word of caution: depending on circumstances, you may find that it
autoconfigures itself when you don't want it to. If this happens, you
might lose your custom configuration. So: back up. It is possible to
identify situations in which adverse autoconfiguration will occur, and
even to prevent them, but if you aren't familiar with the pecularities
of Apple autoconfiguration, it's safest to methodically back up before
restarting the daemons.
In other words: when I compile netatalk myself and use it in most
environments, it works like a dream and is easy to use: highly
recommended. However, there are a bunch of 'ifs' and 'buts' that might
or might not crop up when are setting it up for the first time (and if
your AppleTalk environment changes).
PS. Craig Ringer was recently looking at netatalk for Linux in his
environment, and may be able to offer more advice about 'getting it
going' than I can.
