[plug] Hard disk Testing

Hello Jay & hello plug list members (my first post :-) ,

For hard disk testing under linux I have used a application called badblocks. Left it running overnight and in the morning it had generated a list of all bad blocks found on the device. This list can be used in conjunction with e2fsck to flag them. I haven't heard of any programs which can check a drive controller, however my previous drives which were turning up their toes have had trouble seeking and make unnecessary spin up/spin downs before croaking(audible difference in drive activity).

badblocks is contained in the e2fsprogs package on Debian distros.

Ashley
