[plug] Mozilla problem (tried to install JRE)

Hello,

I was just on the ABR website about to register for GST when I noted
that I needed the CSI (common-signing interface) installed.

I took a look at this and it seems to run under the Sun JVM instead of
the MS one like the eci program and does run under Max OS 10.2 so I
decided to try it out under Linux.

Anyway I went to sun.com/getjava and downloaded:

j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.bin

I installed it as root in /usr/java
using the notes on this page:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/install-linux.html

Under "Installation of Self-Extracting Binary"

Then typed:

export NPX_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/java/j2re-1_4_2_03/plugin/i386/ns4
as root

followed by

cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

and my /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins now looks like:

total 168
drwxr-xr-x    2 root         4096 Feb 18 09:28 ./
drwxr-xr-x    9 root         4096 Jan 24 22:23 ../
-rw-r--r--    1 root            0 Feb 18 09:28 as.txt
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root           44 Dec  2 07:46 flashplayer.xpt ->
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/flashplayer.xpt
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root           46 Dec  2 07:46 libflashplayer.so ->
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root           61 Feb 18 09:27 libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root           41 Nov 19 20:09 libmozilla_bonobo.so ->
../../mozilla-bonobo/libmozilla_bonobo.so
-rw-r--r--    1 root        20080 Jan 22 14:37 libnullplugin.so
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root       131580 Oct  7 20:37 rpnp.so

and now mozilla is broken. Trying to run it from the KDE desktop just
shows the Mozilla icon flashing near the cursor then finally stops
without loading the program.

Trying to run it as root doesn't even bring up the XDM auth failed thing
(I'm logged into KDE as my user account) but there is some disk
activity. I can't see any text output.

Running mozilla -ProfileWizard, however,

brings up:
"
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: No manager for initializing factory?

System error?:: Success
"

I'm using Debian Sid with Kernel 2.6.test7 and KDE 3.1.5-2 and XDM
4.2.1-16

Any ideas as to what I did wrong and how to fix it?

I was planning to register for GST today so I hope all goes as according
to plan.

regards,

Chris Caston
