If xdm launches when you type `startx` then something is mighty odd. Do
you mean possibly the icky old 'twm' window manager?

Odd.

Check the XFree86 log file (usually /var/log/XFree86* but you didn't say
what distro or version you're using) and /var/log/messages . Maybe the
kdm/gdm clients are doing something odd, or maybe they're just
terminating immediately and causing the X server to restart as a
consequence.

Have you changed any software recently? What's the context of this
happening?
