Just upgraded my smoothwall to 2.0 and since this is the season for upgrades,
thought I might share a little experience with those about to suffer.
Gotcha 1)
In setup if you use an ethernet modem for adsl you must disable adsl and
enable pppoe in the address section. Fairly counterintuitive I thought.
When you change the settings, having wasted a lot of time playing in the
connection menu, you must reboot for the change to take effect, no matter if
the network was restarted in the smoothwall box.
Gotcha 2)
I think this may have something to do with the permissions on the CD, which
were all root:root.
Doing a network install I created a link to the smoothwall.tgz file on the cd
mounted in a remote machine. During install the smoothwall box complained
that it could not delete temporary download files and aborted the install.
After looking up the appropriate words, in a paper dictionary because the
gateway was down, I finally copied the file to the web root of the remote
machine and got on with the install. At the end of installing was where
gotcha 1 came to get me.

Anyway all working now.
Looks a lot neater and the backup feature is a pleasure to use. Just saved a
floppy image onto my laptop in case I ever need it.

Tomorrow Sally gets a new computer so lots of fun with Mandrake 9.2 and
Windows XP.
First I may have to fix the holes I stomped in the floor today.

Love
Mike.
