Sorry, meant to add that the file system on the Linux server is most
likely to be ext3 unless someone can give a convincing argument for
Reiser/xfs/whatever.   Most of the data files stored in this applciation
will be quite large - several tens of megabytes - so wasted space
considerations which would be a prime motivation for Reiser use, are not
significant.

Oh, and CODA filesystem is another thing I've been thinking about for
this project.   Ideally it is for remote and otherwise disconnected
situations but it does offer ACL features albeit at a performance
overhead.
