Can you open the unit up ??? If its ethernet, it "should" have an isolation
transformer IC of some sorts. If its RS-232, you should be able to identify
the driver IC with a bit of digging (maybe something like MAX-232) or even
RS-485.

 Looking more closely at the remote, it looks like it has a transmitter and
receiver unit. My guess would be you plug the receiver into your controller
unit, and go walking off with the transmitter. Hence maybe there is alot
more than first meets the eye :
    ** sorry if my ascii diagram doesnt come out **

    [ Ez. Irrigation Controller ]    (RJ-12 cable)  <----->    [ Reciever ]
(rf)      <------>           [ Transmitter ]

  I have seen a setup on a golf course where the operator dialed up some
numbers to activate sprinklers via RF system. But if its like this, there
is no feedback to the transmitter. The way the documentation words
'receiver' and 'transmitter' makes me think its like this ? If so, you may
not be able to get feedback on what is running.

Cheers
