[plug] Kernel V2.4 and initrd

Hi;

I've just found out that 'mkrescue' no longer works with Linux V2.4
kernels. The problem is the initrd which is too large to fit on a
floppy. Does anybody know of a pro forma method whichs works with these
kernels?

This raises the question of why an initrd is needed for booting 2.4
kernels from IDE. As I read it all the initrd does is to do something
weird with /proc/sys/kernel/real-root-dev. Does anybody know what's
going on here? Is there a method of building a bootable 2.4 kernel that
does not need an initrd?

I've just done a quick check of mkboot and it seems to write the
diskette ok but fails to boot - no dmesgs.

Cheers
