Client visiting from Japan. Has spiffy new Toshiba laptop. Wants to read
email. Plugs laptop into phone line, but cannot connect. Phones Toshiba
in Sydney (from Perth) and in broken Japanese/English attempts to
resolve the problem for 20 minutes.

Client gives up and calls Toshiba in Japan. Spends 45 minutes on the
phone to technical support, call gets dropped, calls for another 30
minutes, and still cannot connect. There is no dial tone. Looking for
check-boxes, drivers, looking at problems with the phone system, tries
another computer, still no fun.

I rock up. "May I help you?" 

Ahh, if you plug the phone connector into the modem, it will work, but
if you plug it into the Ethernet socket, it won't.

Client very quiet.
