One test that I used to use on Windows PCs was to open up a command
prompt. If the desktop warped when I moved the prompt window around
the screen, it was likely that it would also occur during regular
use.

BTW thanks for alerting me to the friendliness of >99dpi -- I still have
my main monitor set to 100 or above.

I have no idea how much monitors cost on their own -- my experience is
really with 'pre-built' computers that a business might buy.
