Sigh!   Bingo.   Portmap must be installed and run by default in Debian, so 
I never thought about that in Gentoo-land.   Gentoo installs portmap but it 
is not run by default.  Added /etc/hosts.allow (very restrictive) and 
/etc/hosts.deny files and all is sweet.
