I have a project in mind which appears to lend itself to OCR.  My wife does a lot of cross-stitch needlework, and some of the patterns she gets use a rather poor set of symbols to indicate colours, etc.  Sometimes as bad as ';' for green, ':' for blue!

What I want to do is scan the pattern and print a new copy having replaced the symbols with a more readable set.  For that I think I need an OCR program that is capable of learning new character sets.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
