SOS SOS SOS

I find myself in a bit of a bind. Things progressed as follows:

The first problem was that I could not terminate a console window
except by killing it. I first noticed it after trying to run the
following script from the panel. BTW I'm using xandros (debian) and
their flavour of KDE.

#!/bin/bash
read level
frozen-bubble -l$level -ns

It did not work, so I ticked 'use console' in the advanced properties.
Still did not work, but the console window hung when I tried to
remove it by clicking on the X in the upper right corner.

>From then on, console windows hung when Xed. It appeared that
kdeinit was using a lot of cpu time, so I killed it and the console
window went away.

I thought kdeinit might be corrupt, so I uninstalled and reinstalled
it. First the xandros flavour, then plain-vanilla. Neither had any
effect. Could this have broken some symlinks?

My problem now is that I cannot start KDE. I get the initialisation
screen which hangs on 'loading window manager'. Before that it was
hanging on detecting peripherals. I have 2 user accounts and root,
and all behave the same.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I have been reasonably happy
with xandros, but I worry about using distros that have been modified.
