I had the same problem with my nVidia 64MB mx440 so i downloaded the
nvidia linux display driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-5336.html

then changed the driver in XF86Config-4 from "nv" to "nvidia" and all
worked well.
