(presuming XFree 4.x) Looks like only the i810 driver is useful here.

A past laptop I used had this chipset and it was woeful - but speed was
the least of the problems - hopefully the driver is better now.  One
thing I came across is that the agpgart module is needed for full
control over resolutions etc - and may have an effect on performance. 
DRI is used for acceleration, but that is 3D, not 2D.

"xdpyinfo" will tell you everything neccesary about X itself.  I have
attached (the top part of) mine below.  Resolution and colour depth are
set in XF86conf or XF86conf-4
