What are the messages?

Did you rebuild the kernel?
Did you try a make clean before rebuilding?

If that failed did you save your .config, do a make mrproper, retore it 
and rebuild the kernel?

I've found that when the kernel build gets confused for some reason, you 
just got to do what you just got to do.
