Compaq (when they were Compaq) sold 'Desknotes' where the batteries
were an optional extra. They were intended as desktop replacements -
more powerful than your average laptop, but also larger, heavier,
but cheaper! (IIRC, about $1200 for a 1.2GHz machine about a year or
two ago). They have the advantage that they're easily packed away or
taken places, and they have a much smaller desk footprint.
