Just because something works under Windows is no guarantee it will work
under Linux. The question is, have you had it working under Linux at
all?

Well you ARE running Debian "unstable" are you not?

There is a reason it is called unstable - it does the sorts of things you
have mentioned. It is intended as a repository of bleeding-edge packages
only, which you grab the occasional package from - and test thoroughly
before relying on it. It is NOT intended to be tracked daily with apt-get
upgrade.

I know Debian "Stable" (Woody) is probably not going to make you happy due
to its age (although I'm still running Woody on my main desktop at home
and am very happy with it) but please at least consider running Sarge
(Debian "testing") which is much more stable than Sid will ever be.

I downgraded my laptop from Sid to Sarge after I experienced issues
similar to yours, using the instructions at:

http://people.debian.org/~osamu/pub/downgrade.html

Hope this helps
