Have you looked into using Offline IMAP to synchronise mail between
local mailboxes and an IMAP server? That way you at least don't have
the latency problems that you do with IMAP over slow links.

Well I don't have a laptop (yet?) so I use Squirrel Mail to read my
mail when I'm at Uni. It's a better-behaved IMAP client than Mutt
(not that this is hard :-P) and is plenty nice enough for what I need
it for. It even does threading (though at a significant performance
loss, so I don't use it) and stuff. Still, I don't think I'd want to
use it as my main e-mail client.

Cameron.
