I recall reading something many years ago that bees have little growths 
or 'baskets' on the lower half of their legs to carry pollen.  Their 
knees can move to push pollen into these sacs. Perhaps this has 
something to do with the expression.

Perchance some googling may help verify if this is indeed correct.  I 
found this reference (http://www.yaelf.com/questions.shtml) which 
mentions something similar.
