[plug] Mutt doesn't want to talk ssl/tls, etc

I've set up my mail server to do IMAP (Cyrus-SASL)
It works fine with KMail which recognizes that it should use TLS,
and either DIGEST-MD5 or CRAM-MD5 for secure authentication.
However, even when I'm connecting to imaps://localhost/inbox with
mutt, the system logs indicate that it's refusing a plaintext login;
despite mutt showing that it's discovered the acceptable
authentication schemes.
I've tried setting imap_authenticators="digest-md5:cram-md5" in
.muttrc; but that results in mutt prompting for a password and then
going "dead"... doesn't budge; has to be killed.
