Eegads. that staircase brings back memories....
Back when I was a tafe student in 91 doing the "asociate dip of computer
science" (was actually a bloody good course... except for cobol. Ack!) and
joining the UWA computer club for the express purpose of accessing there
copy of Minix: I was obsessed with the notion of getting unix on my AT.
I remember walking in and seeing these older deep-fried nerdy guys just
stare at me in horror when I told em where I studied, then proceeded to
help one of em with a COBOL problem he had for his comp class (they where
very impressed). I must admit I became a little disturbed when one of em
shrieked from his terminal "Whoa guys! I've just got the yellow crystal on
level 45 and advanced another level! I'm a KICK ASS MAGE NOW!". Aparently
the dude slept in the lab at night cos he played nethack all day
everyday. I always thought that the queerest thing till I ended up at
murdoch and met the MARS kids and discovered there where many legions of
said geeks in this world.
Now that all said, I got my copy of Minix and oh boy was it a buggy mess.
But I could roll my own hd driver for my crazy parallel port version of
network file sharing and THAT made it allll worth while. Minix , being a
learning OS was stupifyingly easy to work out the kernel insides.
Naturally when I got my linux box, slackware was THE BOMB. Never looked
back. Still got a place in my heart of minix tho.
