Stuck it in, booted from the cd.. 
nice knoppix mounts /mnt/hda1 but as read only..

unmounted, then remounted with write..
mv /home/misskim/oldfloppy/shite to correct place.. 

shutdown -r now

boot from hd not cd..

woohoo :)a everything as it used to be.. no loss of anything
'cept a bit of time I guess :)

I dont think this suggestion was on the list, was
just what I tried and it worked, so thought I should share :)
