Oh dear... bit of a wild goose chase. Sorry!

I had forgotten I had a script watching the FW and setting a deny all if it 
fell over (I was having this problem some time ago and never got around to 
house cleaning) 

Anyway... all fixed. Works a treat.

Thank you to everyone who committed time and thought to my problem.
