Atomic mags did a diy awhile back
with an inverter, power supply, and as many batteries you wanted to add.
wasnt pretty, but you could run for HOURS instead of MINUTES on backup :)

could scan and send if want
not the cheapest method (but you run longer and can use the parts for other 
things tooo :)
