I've tried many times to use Debian.
It's necessary to go to testing to get reasonably upto date packages but
then I have all sorts of problems.
For example, right now I can't build pine 4.58 on sparc. Builds ok on
stable but not on testing. Indeed openssl doesn't build either. It seems
someone has screwed up the 64-bitness of libc6.
Doing a dist-upgrade on Debian testing has always been ricky.
So Gentoo is not alone.
