You might also have some luck with some of the samsung cdma handsets.
You'll find that they come with a usb cable, and when plugged in, they
detect as a "SAMSUNG CDMA MODEM"
Although the data costs are ridiculous (2.2c/kbyte) the speeds are
faster than dialup (approx 72000 bps)
and the config should be quite easy.
If coverage is an issue, being cdma may be an advantage (except in the
city - CDMA depth of coverage seems pretty ordinary in a few spots)

I believe it _should_ be OK, provided the phone does AT-modem emulation
on the Ir post. You just need the right AT codes.
I tried this with '3' and a motorola handset, but no luck. The
so-called manual provided with the phone doesn't mention IrDA.
The Indian support is useless, but i eventually got to an Australian
support company who at least understood my question, but didn't help.
Getting CSD by IrDA was no problem. I've been told that bluetooth
-> GPRS might be easier.
