I would persist with apt-proxy if I were you. Once set up it works well. I
use it to proxy the security updates - I did use it to proxy everything,
until I set up a complete (120GB) Debian mirror.

What problems have you got with it?

Relevant bits from my apt-proxy.conf are:

#################################################################
APT_PROXY_CACHE=/share/Debian-Cache

add_backend /security/                                  \
        $APT_PROXY_CACHE/security/                      \
        ftp://security.debian.org/debian-security/
#################################################################

and in my sources.list on various machines:

deb http://waixcolo.linuxit.com.au:9999/security woody/updates main contrib non-free

 - Matt
