Unfortunately, it is difficult or impossible to get quality 17" tubes
now. While you can get a new 17" for peanuts, cheap is the order of the
day in more ways than one. Most of the 17" monitors I've seen for sale
lately have been so poor that if I change a large part of the displayed
image from white to black, the output distorts. I've also seen quite a
few that are so blurry you can't run them at 1024x768.

Colour quality? Purity controls? Real sharpness? Don't even try.

It might well be worth repairing a really nice 17", like one of the last
pro Sony 17" monitors, rather than replacing it. Of course, depending on
the age of the monitor it may also be too degraded to be that much
better than the current ones.
