It may be worth trying a slightly more standard configuration if you are
encountering problems. Do you need 2.6? You realise the NVidia 2.6
support is relatively new, right? Considered downgrading to 2.4 to see
if that helps?

Try using the 'nv' driver for a while and see if the problem goes away.
If so, it's probably a bug in the Nvidia drivers.

Failing that, check for proper cooling, try falling back to a 2.4
kernel, and consider upgrading X.
