Rowan,

I don't see any reason why you should stick with 2.4 if in indeed that
is whave you have.

Do uname -a to see what kernel you are running.

If it's 2.4 I'll help up upgrade to 2.6

If you still wish to follow the instructions on a 2.4 kernel it will
help if you just install make using apt.
