Thanks Kirk, that did it. Previously, when installing, I hadn't set a 
default. I just reconfigured as you suggested and selected en_AU a the 
default. The date is the correct format in thunderbird. Now if only I 
can get it to display new messages in sub-folders I can make the switch.
