Oh, that's different, we were thinking 3-40000 files!

Disc errors on the server making it retry? (is anything showing up at
the end of dmesg?)

Are there links to automounted network filesystems that are geting
looked up, failing and timing out somehow?

Could you save a copy of "ls -ifl" for us to see?
