Does `find . -maxdepth 1' respond promptly? It does here, even on a
*giant* directory (maildir-style mail folder with 10k messages in it)
where ls takes nearly 30 seconds to read, sort and format its output (on
a dual Xeon).

AppleTalk does take a few seconds to read a 400-entry directory at work
on the MacOS/9 machines. The MacOS/X machines seem much snappier.
