I realise I'm a bit late to the party, but hey. Even if you can't mount
it over FireWire, have you tried using dd_rescue to take an image yet?
You may find that it manages to get a complete image, or close enough,
allowing you to keep that and send off the drive.

I've done just that for several friends whose iBook drives have died.
