Debian is a little more complicated than that. They are working on a
"multiarch" solution that will fix all this up. However, for the
moment, there is not a lib64 on debian - they are all still lib. Which
makes lots of this stuff a bit harder.

(Including installing 64-bit NVidia drivers from the NVidia installer.
It expects to install to lib64, too. Some symlinking fixed that one).

The chroot is not that bad - there are instructions in the AMD64 howto
that specify a shell script that you can put in that makes starting
things in the chroot very transparent. Add a few bind mounts (or
alternately, a rbind mount, when I can get that to work automatically)
and you're away.

I know it's not ideal. But it works for me, and solves my problems.
