But the question is did the ISP supply him with the modem, if so they probably setup the dhcp to tie in with their network.  As WolfBite stated send more information on the layout of the network.

Its already been mentioned, its a Netcomm NB5 so it's IP is more than likely 192.168.1.1.

modem usually dhcp 192.168.0.? 192.168.1.? 10.1.1.?

computer usually dhcp (unless set static, then you should know what ip you set it)

confusion usuall happens when both want to dhcp (ad routers to that :)

most people have a network befor they have adsl
so when they add an adsl to the network, it usually doesnt work (either because dhcp or staticip of machines conflict)

work out which one will be the least work and set it to match the other


(else explain you modem and network layout better)
