A few days ago I reported problems with sshd not working on Gentoo... not
allowig any connections despite apparently all being okay. I sent a plea
also to th Gentoo forum and recvd an answer that I should check permissions
on the /var/empty and /var/run directories as well as the sshd entry in
/etc/passwd

the passwd file entry and the permissions for /var/run (755) were
correct. However the perms for /var/empty were supposed to be 644 whereas
mine were 755. Chmod'd this to 644 and hey presto, ssh is happy. Just
to check, reset to 755 and ssh STILL happy. I hate that! :-) Finally
left it at 644 just to be safe but all remains well. Fingers crossed.

Thanks to Craig, Julian, Bill, et al but I didn't get to try anything else
at this stage.... maybe it will try to bite me in future nd I'll be able to
delve deeper.
Denis
