[plug] Wifi woes

Howdy all,

Just wondering if anybody had any wifi experience, that can help us out.

I am trying to get my Wavelan card working on my laptop. It recognised
the card as a wi0 and i have given the syntax as

hostname.wi0
!/sbin/wicontrol \$if- e 1 -k "0xXXXXX" -v 1 -T 1 "Belkin" -p 1
dhcp

then restarted the network with /etc/netstart command.

listening on BPF/wi0/00:XX:XX
sending on BPF/wi0/00:XX:XX
sending on socket/fallback/fallback-net
dhcprequest on wi0 to 255.f.f.f port 67
dhcprequest on wi0 to 255.f.f.f port 67
dhcpdiscover on wi0 to 255.f.f.f port 67 interval 8
dhcpoffer from 192.168.2.1
dhcprequest on wi0 to 255.f.f.f port 67
dhcpack from 192.168.2.1
new network number: 192.168.2.0
new boardcast address: 192.168.2.255
bound to 192.168.2.4 -- renewal in 536870911 seconds
route: XXXX.com

Then just to make sure the if is up, with

ifconfig wi0 up

Then checked out the link status with

wicontrol -L

AP information
AP[0]:
netname (SSID): [Belkin]
BSSID: [00:XX:XX:XX]
Channel: [11]
Beacon interval: [100]
Quality/signal/noise [signal] [41/97/56]
[db] [41/-52/-93]
Capinfo [ESS PRIV]

Now i checked the link with

ifconfig -a

wi0: flags: 8843<up,boardcast, running, simplex, multicast> mtu 1500
address: 00:XX:XX:XX
nwid: Belkin
nwkey: 0xXXXX
powersave off
media: IEEE802.11 autoselect (DS11)
status: active
inet6 fe80::XXX:XXXX prefixlen 64 scope id 0x6
inet 192.168.2.4 netmask 0xFFFFFF00 boardcast 192.168.2.255

So after noticing that the link staus is active and up i ping the
router.

ping 192.168.2.1
ping 192.168.2.1 (192.168.2.1) 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: host is down
ping: wrote 192.168.2.1 64 chars, ret = -1
3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss.

Now this where i am lost for ideas, as i don't know where to go from
here. My only assumption is that the information on wicontrol -L show
that the

Quality/signal/noise [signal] [41/97/56]
[db] [41/-52/-93]

is very low, below 50 for the Quality after a number of wicontrol -L
commands tries...is this why i am not reaching it. As well i am not sure
if all the syntax is correct for the hostname.wi0? i am using the
firmware 8.72.

Could anyone shed some light to this.

As well, do i need to set anything else to connect to the internet
beside firefox, like pf or can i run it in its default setting.

Much appreciated with thanks.
