Do you have a "DontVTSwitch" line in your xorg.conf? If not, try
forcing it to false?
You can probably do Alt+Sysrq+R to switch the keyboard into Raw
mode, then try Alt+F1, but that's less than optimal. Does running
chvt from a root prompt in X work?
