Thanks Carl.  There is no /etc/alsa.d in SuSE unfortunately.  However I 
did find a posting on a SuSE forum indicating that kdemultimedia3-mixer 
overwrites the settings.  It went on to say the package is not needed 
and should be deleted.

I deleted it and the problem appears solved.
