I would agree with this. I don't think the hardware of that vintage
supported
booting from a cd for starters. You would need to make up two boot disks
to do the install. Mandrake 10.1 boot into the latest 2.6.x kernel which
may
not have support compiled for the 486 architecture. The 2.4.x should be OK.

Perhaps a better idea would be to ask Mary what she intends to do with the
machine.

What operating system is the machine running now?
What purpose does the machine fulfill at present? 
Is it the only machine or a second one?
Is it going to be used for a Workstation, server or something else?

Once we know in which context the machine will used, a better
recommendation
can be made. Mary you may have to consider a newer machine.

There is always 'Computer Angles' that you could turn to for help.

One of the threads said you were in the country. Is this true? If you could
give a town/suburb there may be someone near that could help.

That is the Microsoft software model. Linux has a different approach.
