It surprises me that this discussion has not included the suggestion to
evaluate a bunch of LiveCD distributions. It seems to me that the path
forward is to simplify the level of complexity, both for the new user
and the existing membership of this discussion list.

The evaluation process should likely include the level of community
support for the chosen LiveCD, the frequency of bug-fixes/updates, the
amount of documentation and the level of familiarity within our own PLUG
community.

It should be noted that the Computer Angels Distribution does not AFAIK
(As Far As I Know :-) come in a LiveCD form and its target audience is
not really the same as the beginning Windows to Linux evaluator/migrator.

I have a fondness for the Knoppix LiveCD which stems from the fact that
it is updated regularly, has a large community, has Debian as an origin
and is able to be installed onto a user's computer at different levels
of commitment to Linux, ie. you can leave your hard-disk untouched, or
you can save user settings on your hard-disk, or you can install the cd
image, or you can install the whole deal.

Finally I'd like to make an observation to those who seem to be getting
mightily up-set about this whole thing. "Email is not the same as
telephone, which is not the same as face-to-face." An insult in email
likely hits harder and lasts longer than a joking prod in the ribs in a
personal encounter. If you find yourself getting upset and in need of
self defence, by all means write the email, but for the sake of everyone
else in our community, sit on it for 24 hours, re-read it and if you
still feel the same, send it.

You should also know that everything you send to this list is archived
and future fellow Internet users may well locate your rant and think
twice about hiring or interacting with you.

What you write matters, so spend some quality time thinking about it
before you fly off the handle.
