Try using:

mysql --host=localhost --user=mythtv mythtv --password

... and see if you can connect with that. I've guessed that the database
name is `mythtv' - if it's not, change it in the command line above.

If you can't, you need to fix your MySQL authentication setup before
continuing. This can be ... er ... interesting. You might want to get
familiar with the CREATE USER and GRANT commands, or use some MySQL
management GUI.
