[plug] An OO question

I am trying to generate some presentation handouts using openoffice in a
format similar to the way powerpoint can do: I want 3 slides per page,
with a lined area alongside each content slide for people to write
notes.

So far the only way I can make it work is to insert a slide with the
lines on it after every content slide - very clumsy.  Does anyone know
of an alternative?
