Your screenshot looks fine to me, but that's a dump of the frame buffer
rather than a shot of what is actually being rendered by the LCD.

Are you certain it's native resolution is 1024x768? My suspicion would
be that it's a 1400xblah LCD with a BIOS that doesn't report video modes
for that resolution. i8xx perhaps?

Details such as model, video chipset, distro, distro version, and
Xorg/XFree version would no doubt be helpful. Pre-emptively supplying
such information would be nice.
