Well, strictly speaking that is true. However if your friend isn't in 
the business of IT and you want to stay friends, then in my professional 
opinion your friend is better off spending actual money and paying a 
hosting company to deal with this.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from your idea to build your own server, 
but for mission critical environments, I'd suggest that unless you've 
actually done this, with backups and security, you're asking for trouble.
